This was the opening match in the group with Norway in search of their first place at the Final's since 1938. They did not get off to the ideal start though losing out 2-1 with goals from McStay and Johnston either side of a Fjørtoft equaliser wrapping up the points for the visitors. Andersen was an unused substitute for this game but did represent his country 27 times in total and spent his best years at club level in the German Bundesliga
