The midfielder helped Spurs to 13th and 6th place finishes in the First Division under Terry Venables during this time. Despite making his senior debut for the side back in 1985, 1987-88 was Howells' first real breakthrough season, he made 11 appearances in the League helping Spurs to a 13th place finish in Terry Venables' first season in charge. From there on it only got better for the midfielder, he featured 27 times the following season in this classic Hummel design bagging 3 goals in big wins over Middlesbrough, Forest and Luton. He powered the side to the FA Cup in 1991 and stayed with the side until 1998 when he joined Southampton after making 335 appearances for Spurs in nearly 13 years as a first team player for the club.
